CPD eLearning: round up of what’s new
It has been a busy time for since the last quarterly update, with a number of new releases to highlight:
- – In this podcast, we join Dr Nadia Imran, CPD eLearning Podcast Editor, in conversation with Dr Madonna Yanny to discuss psychiatry speciality training pathways in the Middle East, as well as prevalent psychiatric conditions that occur within the perinatal and postnatal period and important developments within female mental health in the region. - – This module will add to your knowledge of the psychophysiology and immunology of trauma. It will help you avoid retraumatisation and assist co-production with patients receiving needs-led treatment and recovery plans. An increased awareness of trauma, combined with effective strategies for working with patients who have experienced it, can support the clinician in feeling effective, thereby reducing the risk of compassion fatigue. - – Religion and spirituality can be a powerful part of a person’s life experience, and interest in the impact of religion and spirituality on mental health has blossomed over the past two decades. Our growing awareness of and interest in spiritual matters as a profession warrants a growing skill set to engage with patients about these experiences. This module, a joint commission with BJPsych Advances, is presented in the hope of assisting with this important task. CPD credits: 1.5
As part of our Module updates programme, we look to update our content every 2 years. Recently released updates include:
- – People with chronic mental health problems may be particularly vulnerable to impaired physical health and poor lifestyle choices. The aim of this module is to familiarise all clinicians treating patients with chronic severe mental disorders with a systematic and practical approach towards the diagnosis of lifestyle-associated physical health problems and potential treatment strategies. CPD credits: 1.5
- – This module will help you understand how to monitor and interpret different renal parameters, especially the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR), so as to manage renal adverse effects. You will learn about the risks and benefits of lithium continuation or discontinuation in patients developing renal impairment. This module provides an overview of the renal adverse effects of taking lithium, focussing on chronic kidney disease (CKD) in particular. CPD credits: 0.5
- – General adult psychiatrists play a central role in the assessment and management of patients, many of whom are parents and others who may also pose a risk to children. This module aims to highlight the type of scenarios the clinician may encounter, where safeguarding children issues may either be obvious or emerge following further assessment informed by a greater knowledge/understanding of this complex area. This module provides advice on how clinicians can effectively manage such scenarios, including advice on where they may access support, what information they should share and with whom. CPD credits: 1.5
- – This module will help you understand how to manage violence in young people and adolescents specifically within an in-patient setting and learn about rapid tranquillisation (RT) guidance for this age group, including the different classes of medication used in RT and their routes of administration. You will also learn about post-RT monitoring and be aware of special circumstances that require additional consideration when RT is used. When aggression occurs within a community setting, please refer to local health, safety and security policy. CPD credits: 1
- – Critical psychiatry is a broad critique of mainstream psychiatry that has emerged in recent years which challenges some of psychiatry's most deeply held assumptions. It draws on philosophy, history, anthropology, social science and mental health service users' experiences. There is no definitive 'critical psychiatry position'. It is a collection of critical perspectives intended to produce a more reflective, sceptical and patient-centred approach to the theory and practice of psychiatry. In this module, we will define critical psychiatry and examine the understanding of and the responses to mental disorder. CPD credits: 1.5
Other modules recently updated as part of our established Module updates programme, where we look to update our content every 2 years, include Domestic abuse: identifying and responding to victims and perpetrators, Neuroimaging in dementia and Diversity training for psychiatrists.
