Enhancing Drugs: Image Enhancer

Event Information

In a culture that often pushes us to strive for more — look better, perform better, and achieve more — this final episode in our unique webinar series examines the growing role of image-enhancing drugs. Throughout this series, we’ve explored drugs that enhance sexual performance, cognition, and now physical appearance. We explored the motivations behind their use, the substances involved, and the implications for mental health and clinical care.

This session will focus on semaglutide and tirzepatide—drugs developed for diabetes and obesity, now increasingly used for body image enhancement. Professor Fabrizio Schifano will explore their clinical and psychopharmacological aspects, particularly in relation to addiction. Professor Gian Paolo Fadini will discuss their medical use in treating diabetes and obesity, while Professor Giovanni Martinotti will highlight the risks linked to unlicensed online sales.

The session will end with a live panel discussion with all speakers.

  • Lead Consultant Psychiatrist (drug and alcohol; locum); West Sussex

Professor Schifano is one of the very few physicians in Europe with training and specialist qualifications in both (clinical) pharmacology and psychiatry. Outstanding contributions have been made to several (e.g. mainly clinical) areas, including the identification of those physiopathological alterations which are making the individuals prone to developing either a substance or a behavioural addiction.

This knowledge is of crucial relevance in identifying possible treatment and management approaches which are properly tailored to these very vulnerable clients’ needs. Over the years, he has developed skills in a range of areas, including treatment and management of substance-based and non-substance-based addiction in both clinical and neurobiological terms.
